What is a JSON formatter?
A JSON formatter takes raw JSON, usually compressed onto a single line, and rewrites it with consistent indentation, line breaks, and spacing. The data itself is unchanged; only the presentation becomes readable.
Why JSON arrives unreadable
APIs, logs, and databases return JSON in its most compact form: one long line with no spaces, so it travels and stores efficiently. That is great for machines and terrible for people. A developer pasting a response into an editor is staring at a wall of text with no visible structure.
What a formatter actually does
A formatter parses the JSON and writes it back out with structure: each nesting level indented, every object and array on its own set of lines, and keys aligned. It can also sort keys alphabetically if you ask. The values are preserved exactly. It is the difference between scanning and reading.

What a formatter does not fix

Three tools with overlapping names do very different jobs. A validator checks whether JSON is syntactically correct and reports the exact location of the first error. A formatter takes valid JSON and adds indentation and line breaks so it is readable. A minifier does the reverse: it strips whitespace to shrink JSON for storage or transfer.
